Georgina is making a real impression

A key part to the Oaklea Trust Mission Statement is “to support individuals to achieve their aspirations through care, education and development; encouraging independence and maximising capabilities”. What better example than Georgina.

Pauline Coulthard from Oaklea Leisure Team tells us more: “This is Georgina Black, she’s been an active member of Oaklea supported clubs like Steps & Riversiders for a long time and does upholstery at Right2Work on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Georgina had studied catering at college and was keen to use the skills she had gained there. Georgina found a volunteer position at Booths supermarket in Windermere, to work in the cafe on a Thursday. She was very nervous at first as the environment is very different from what she was used to. Booths cafe is often extremely busy and fast paced with customers and lots of tourists. She has learned to work as a team, and also learnt to prioritise jobs, and work unprompted.

Georgina has a variety of duties -clear tables, ensure tables are clean for new customers, to load and unload an industrial dishwasher, which she has nicknamed Bertie. She then takes washed crockery to the service area, where she has started to make and then serve hot drinks with support. She also restocks the sandwiches, yogurts, crisps, and drinks in both the cafe and shop food to go section, so learning to rotate stock, and checking dates of products. Georgina has gained in confidence, now engaging in conversation with customers and colleagues.

Georgina also works in the kitchen with the preparation of salads, and recently has been in charge of preparing afternoon tea for the Oaklea Golden Moments trip back in June. (She prepared the sandwiches, cakes, and scones, made teas and laid the table for the group. She really enjoyed this).

The sessions have gone down really well with Booths too; “Georgina was also presented with flowers and gift card from the Booths manager thanking Georgina for her hard work every Thursday. She is very proud of her achievements and would in the future like to find paid work in this industry.”

Fabulous effort G (and our Leisure Team)!
