She shoots she scores - that's our Mary

Here's a great example of how we embed the "7 keys to citizenship" approach to ensuring our customers live as independently as possible -and get to do the things they want to do!

Mary is an Oaklea customer in Rothbury, Northumberland. She is also a fanatic Newcastle United supporter, everything she talks about is about NUFC. In January she finally got to go to St James’s Park on a stadium tour and watch a match -she fully enjoyed it.

Her Oaklea support worker, Laura Plunkett went with her: “When I took over as Mary’s key worker she told me that all she wanted to do was to go and see Newcastle United play a match and watch it for real. So I put the steps in motion for this to happen and on the 18th January 2020 Mary and myself set off to go and watch the Magpies in their stadium. We watched as the crowds flooded in and Mary soaked up the atmosphere as 52,217 people arrived in the stadium to watch Newcastle vs Chelsea.”

Laura adds: “Mary loved every minute of the game and it gave me so much pleasure in making one of her life ambitions a reality and we didn’t go unbeaten as Mary was the lucky mascot leaving us a win of 1-0 . We left the stadium two very happy supporters & can’t wait for the next match.”

Mary considers formations 4-4-2, 4-3-1 - it’s a hard life being a coach!
