Profile: Oaklea, 10th May, 2018
“It’s not about the house – it’s about the customers and how they’ve made it a lovely home” - Oaklea, always putting the customer at the heart of what we do! To emphasise this we're producing new information leaflets aimed at those working in Adult Social Care and anyone tasked with choosing or referring potential customers (this can also include friends and family in assisting with making such choices). Our latest involves one of our homes in Kendal, Lowther Park and Supported Living Accommodation in Barrow.
They’re made in conjunction with staff and customers who have a direct input into what they look and feel like. Customers in properties like Lowther Park and Langdale House are part of the Oaklea ‘My Life My Choice’ plan (MLMC).
MLMC looks at what support a person needs and how they want to progress (This can involve family & friends where appropriate). It’s all about supporting customers to achieve their desired outcomes such as planning a holiday, an activity or things like taking up training or further education opportunities.
Kelvin, who lives at Lowther Park, has been able to do all kinds of things thanks to MLMC - but it’s very much down to him regarding what that is. For example one of his responsibilities is to check the house car - fuel, oil, washer fluid etc. It also allows a big input to things like having a holiday -“I got to go to Benidorm as I love the TV programme and I wanted to see it for myself. I liked it so much i’m going back.”
Meanwhile in Barrow Geoffrey has always loved trains - he’s been able to decorate his bedroom with locomotive pictures and railway memorabilia -and through MLMC has been to places like the L’aal ratty - Ravenglass & Eskdale railway just up the coast.
