The John Street Jammers get cooking

17th Feb, 2016

A catch up with the John Street Jammers after their win at the Oaklea employee celebration for our 25th birthday.

Back in October 2015, a team from Barnard Castle triumphed in the Oaklea Dragons Den competition at our annual employee conference. Nic and Keely won an investment from the Dragons which they used to set up the John Street Jammers.

Their proposal to the Dragons included using local pick-your-own fruit, and getting the customers involved too, so a real team effort. Both Nic and Keely put their skills to the test at the vintage coffee morning, held at Craigmore in Barnard Castle, there their jams went down a treat.

A few months on and the Jammers are up and running! Their most recent produce includes orange and lemon marmalades and strawberry jam, which are on sale for £1.50 a jar and have proven very popular so far!

The other members of the team, customers Kevin and Christopher, are very involved with all the different processes of keeping the project running. Their role includes helping with the labelling and decorating of the jars, collecting orders, dealing with payments, balance checks, and paying money into the bank.

The next step for Nic and Keely and their team will take them to local markets, selling to the general public. The profits they generate will go back in to their running costs, which will help them to develop new recipes and produce bigger batches!

We have a small stock in our Stramongate branch in Kendal, and orders can be placed with Nic or Keely, based in Barnard Castle, on 01833 638 725.
