Employment Case Study - Sarah

At the age of 19, Sarah was referred to us from Jobcentre Plus for our Work Preparation programme. She had an anxiety disorder – a severe case of agoraphobia.

Our employment trainer's work began by building up a strong trust with Sarah, then giving her the encouragement and support needed to slowly face her fear of public and unfamiliar places.

From only being able to face walking around the block, Sarah slowly gained the confidence to travel alone on public transport – the final step she needed to accomplish to be ready for her work placement.

Sarah's love of animals led to a placement as 'General Support' at a local veterinary surgery. Impressing her employers so much, they offered her a job with additional financial support to study for a veterinary assistant qualification.

Her ambition to go on from this and become a veterinary nurse was eventually realised – a huge accomplishment for both Sarah and the Oaklea Trust.
