“Do you see me?” is about challenging the barriers people with a learning disability face, MENCAP
This week is Learning Disability Awareness Week and the theme is “Do you see me?” it’s all about:
- Being seen
- Being heard
- Being valued
So what better way to show this….
Being seen – Parc Life beckons
Thanks to our social care teams we can ensure those we support can make the most of life.
Some of our South Lakes based customers have packed their stuff and are on a week long holiday at Center Parcs, Whinfell Forest near Penrith.
“Well, that’s our group off on their holibobs! Center Parcs look out because here they come! Alice is on a separate holiday to the Isle of Mull* this week while the rest of the house enjoy sunny Penrith. They’re being supported by Oaklea’s fabulous staff Jake and Kerry-Ann! Have a great week guys -I’m not jealous to be missing out at all!” Oaklea’s ‘home alone’ Kirstie Nicholson

Time well spent – Kyle, with support Danielle, had a grand time in Preston – bowling, crazy golf & arcade fun!
Being heard – Going going gone
Elsewhere in the heart of the Lakes it was time to say goodbye to Grace. Four of our young adults are leaving us this summer after 3 years at Learning2Live in Windermere. Grace is first out the blocks and is heading for a new life in Barrow.
The significant event was marked by having a farewell breakfast with her housemates before an emotional goodbye!
“I loved my time at L2L – I’m now in a position (having spent 3 years upskilling) to move into my own flat (with support when needed at key times).” Grace, formerly a housemate at L2L!
L2L House Manager, Sarah Atkinson adds: “Grace has completed her Learning2Live journey and we are all so pleased that she is now able to put everything she has learned with us into practice. She now begins the next chapter of her life, living with greater independence in a flat of her own in Barrow!
The house will be a much quieter place without Grace’s sociable, bubbly personality and her infectious laugh. We will all miss her and wish her every success for her future. Keep in touch Grace, we look forward to hearing all about your next exciting adventure!”
Being valued – Something to celebrate!
“We had a lovely time attending Alice’s birthday party on Saturday before she headed to the Scottish Isles. Sam is behind the camera who also brought fellow Oaklea customer George to help celebrate.” Oaklea’s Becki Kidd

Shy retiring Ryan and the young fellas we support in Ulverston making the most of some sunny weather this week! Being in the moment for sure!
