You fill up my senses!
Sometimes it’s simple adjustments that make all the difference to people’s lives – and if it reaches the senses others can’t reach – all the better! So lets hear it for our County Durham teams…
It starts with some animal magic…
Are you relaxed….then we will begin!

In Spennymoor they’ve created a sensory garden and also have a doggone great idea when it comes to reaching out…

Paws for thought
Oaklea’s Kay Berriman: “We went to have a coffee at Bloom and Witches in the town. My Daughter Elle was there with her dog Peaches. Mags wanted me to show you all how lovely she is and Mags bought her a ‘Puppichino’ as a treat from her walk. Mags loves dogs and loves having Peaches and daughter Maggie come to stay. Maggie is learning to be a Sensory dog to help customers like Mags with anxiety and other issues”

Sharing the senses….
When out and about in Spennymoor they also drop by other people Oaklea support!

“Anthony loves to have a cuddle with Maggie if we are passing on our walks” adds Kay
A sensory idea that really chimes with everyone!
If that wasn’t enough – they have more leads! They’ve been busy making a Sensory Tree outside in the garden in Spennymoor.
Kay chimes in: “It has lights, sounds and colourful decorations for all the customers to enjoy on sunny days (when we have them!). The wind chime and bamboo chime make it very relaxing while watching the birds and squirrels eat the nuts.”

Sensory working overtime
The serious bit – did you know:
- Time spent in a sensory space helps people improve their visual, auditory and tactile processing!
- It helps with fine and gross motor skills.
- It provides a sense of calm and comfort.
- A sensory space and activities help with learning and ultimately improves focus.
- Sensory spaces have emerged as invaluable therapeutic environments for anyone dealing with anxiety and stress.
- By setting up a safe and calming space filled with sensory experiences they offer a range of benefits such as relaxation, self-regulation, and empowerment.
Think these three already know that…
